A grassroots movement was once a significant thing. It fought to right injustices that had gone unchallenged for too long. It sought to maximise the democratic rights for the greatest number of people. Even if their ideas were unpopular or misguided, they were well-meaning individuals working for a common good.
Those days are gone. Groups today no longer share anything common with those folk, and their actions are anything but good. Old-fashioned activism has become irrelevant to the pious, self-righteous, self-loathing progeny of Western society that dances and flails to the song of ‘protest-culture’.
What started with feminism and civil rights has opened the door to liberal-extremism and, with it, a torrent of ritual social erosion for erosion’s sake.
It chips away at the walls of individualism to sculpt bland homogeneity with each sweeping stroke of faux-clad self-deprecation and tirade of expletive-laden, hate-speech-denouncing hate speech.
If you fail to toe the line, you’re strung up by your thumbs and socially slaughtered before your digital peers.
‘Give them gluten-free bread and media circuses.’
It’s a hypocrisy-laden affair these activists have with socialism; they call for the doing away of a suite of social restrictions and institutions, all the while demanding those institutions enforce their desires with further laws. This mindset feeds into the slow collapse all Western societies have faced throughout the postmodern age. Morally, absolutes are undefined, all things are subjective and based on the individual’s lived experience and as such, no one can critique, criticise, or even question another’s point of view because their lens differs from yours and should therefore be celebrated regardless of its foolishness. In the heaving of this unstable firmament however, the ground on which you choose to build your foundations could crumble, on the winds of outrage, as the offensive flavour of the month shifts and evolves into the next issue.
As we in the West trudge through the muddied waters of trans-rights, the expulsion of genders, climate doxology, and the like, other cultures unfettered by such distractions continue to move toward greater prosperity and growth.
That is not to say that some issues ought not be challenged, debated, perhaps even acknowledged, but it will be a Pyrrhic victory for those that seek to war against every bastion of the cultural norm that has underpinned human existence since its inception – deified or naturalised – in a bid to satisfy their self-importance.
We mustn’t forget the corporate world though, who are happy to wade into the culture wars with faces contorted with sombreness and meaningless emotional epithets in order to capitalise on the social cache of those hardline activists who are so single-minded in their goal, they fall feebly for the rhetoric and marketing agenda of their former enemies; corporate, capitalist Australia.
Ironically, they have become much more an enemy of the silent majority, and as such, have witnessed backlash. At times this comes from fed up families, who can’t seem to take a bite of a slice of pizza without picking off rainbow-coloured Pride pepperonis.
Businesses inadvertently concede with their rainbow logos that they are now inclusive and tolerant, implying they weren’t before.
These perceived problems in the Western world are ultimately class issues. They stem from a desire to escape the boredom and diminished returns affluence brings by endorsing extreme and sadistic ‘sacrifice’ as a sort of penance.
Though, like a drug addict, what they really seek is that next hit of serotonin so they might justify the injustices they perceive. They have been apathetic for so long that the dissipation of guilt becomes a chronic fixation.
And so, spurred on by emotion and throwing logic to the wind farm, they trudge off on their crusade to the Holy Land. They pray daily to their saints, muttering like endangered frogs by a creek – Gre-ta. Gre-ta. Gre-ta.
They wistfully walk toward that ideal world they dream of where everyone is equal, there is no poverty or greed, and all the men, women, theys, zes, and zyrs live harmoniously with nature and free from oppression.
They think to themselves, ‘How could we possibly seek to achieve such Nirvana in a world that seems apathetic to the innocuous, innocent pleas we make to our fellow “theys”?’
‘We innocently glue ourselves to city streets and stand in front of traffic to get our passive point across! We innocently seek equality by peacefully forcing others to adhere to our view or be labelled for the intolerant bigots they are! We will peacefully eradicate poverty and greed by crashing economies with high taxes and vast handouts to the ‘needy’! We will live harmoniously with our peers by teaching white people they are trash, decrying nationalism, and promoting homogeneity! And we will live free from oppression by forcing governments to legislate over everything we say, think, and do that goes against the grain of our passive and peaceful ideology!’
For so-called progressives, halting progress is their forte.
