In the latest woke madness, an American author has claimed that the desire to be thin is actually a result of white supremacy. In her book Fat Talk: Parenting in the Age of Diet Culture, journalist Virginia Cole Smith, who identifies as ‘small fat’, argues that fat phobia, or ‘anti-fat bias’ can be linked directly to the end of slavery in the US. She argues that when slavery was abolished by white men and African Americans started gaining rights, those same white men started to panic because they were losing power. So, they deliberately ‘demonized black bodies and glamorised thinness’ as a way of oppressing black Americans. And there I was thinking that abolishing slavery had been a good thing.
