When the President of the United States in Donald Trump, and there is an old English word ‘trumpery’ – clearly there must be a temptation to bring them together. And the person who succumbed to that temptation was Beverly Mahone, also known as Auntie Bev Vocabulary Builder, when she released an Instagram video about this word, and racked up hundreds of thousands of views. The great American dictionary, the Merriam-Webster, defines two senses of the noun trumpery in modern usage: ‘worthless nonsense’ and ‘trivial or useless articles; junk’. While according to the Oxford English Dictionary this word ‘trumpery’ now means: ‘Something regarded as having little or no true value, especially when presented as having greater value than it in fact possesses.’ So, for Donald Trump this is a word with an unfortunate coincidence of sound, and for the Democrats it is a gift – another empty addition to their tsunami of meaningless Trump abuse!
