Dan Andrews’ mini me: Victoria’s new Premier is worse than the last one

It’s been less than a month since Premier Daniel Andrews abruptly ended his premiership and handed over the reins to his loyal deputy Jacinta Allan.

The new Premier’s honeymoon is well and truly over.

It’s hardly surprising considering Allan has all the defects of her predecessor. Like Andrews, she’s a dyed-in-the wool hard-left Marxist from the socialist-left faction. She’s also a big government, big union, big corporatist, and big spender… In her former role as Andrews’ deputy, Allan was complicit in Victoria’s reckless spending. In fact, as the Minister for Major Transport Infrastructure, Allan was personally responsible for endless cost overruns.

She was also the minister responsible for the Commonwealth Games where costs blew out so spectacularly that the games had to be cancelled altogether.

Just like Andrews, Allan refuses to be open and transparent about the Commonwealth Games fiasco. Indeed, she declined to appear before an inquiry into its failure.

Nobody can forget Andrews’ outrageous performance before the commission of inquiry into hotel quarantine. He delivered one denial after another, claiming to forget pretty much everything that happened.

But Allan is going one better by not turning up to answer questions about the Commonwealth Games. Worse, it is probable the minister knew months ago that the event was facing cost blowouts of up to $2bn. After four months of dithering, the Commonwealth Games were cancelled, yet right to the bitter end the Labor government was pretending that the games were going ahead.

Labor, under Andrews and now Allan, has presided over many fiscal fiascos, no doubt because they are disorganised and incompetent. Already staff are quitting the new Premier’s office in droves. Ben Hubbard, an adviser to former Prime Minister Julia Gillard, lasted two days in Allan’s office before tossing in the towel.

With the record debt that Andrews ran up over his nine years in office, it was inevitable that sooner or later the new Premier would have to start raising taxes.

That day has already come with a new tax announced. No doubt Allan will attempt to use Andrews as a scapegoat to achieve a smooth exit from the blame. But the sad reality is that she is just Andrews’ mini-me. She joined the Labor Party at 19 years old and worked as a staffer. She waited until an opportunity to win a seat for Labor popped up and she was elected at 25 years old. She’s been there ever since.

The bitter reality for Victorians is that the Opposition is, if anything, even worse. Opposition Leader John Pesutto was one of the last Liberals in the country to declare his opposition to the Voice. His most notable achievement so far is making his party even smaller by outrageously accusing his Moira Deeming of associating with neo-Nazis.

The only hope for Australia is to vote differently. We must elect politicians with conviction who have lived in the real world and love our country. Parties like the United Australia Party need your support. We can save Australia, but the people have to vote differently.
